A Glasgow cathedral is the first in the UK to offer same-sex marriages

St Mary’s Cathedral has become the first in the UK to offer same-sex couples the opportunity to wed within the church.

It follows the recent vote in General Synod which allowed clergy in the Scottish Episcopal Church to be nominated to conduct such weddings.

And St Mary’s Cathedral, on Great Western Road, has announced some of its clergy will be able to conduct the marriages, following a unanimous vote by the cathedral’s board of trustees.

The cathedral has been offering same-sex blessings since 2008, and the news of allowing weddings to take place has been welcomed.

Speaking to Pink News, the Provost of the Cathedral, the Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth said: “It is hugely exciting to open up wedding services to all couples who want to get married.
