FEAST OF SAINT ANDREW, Apostle and Missionary, 1st Century –

Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, Greece and Russia and was Christ’s first disciple. He is said to have travelled to Asia Minor, Greece, and as far as Hungary, Russia and to the banks of the Oder in Poland. In Greece, he was given the choice of being offered as a sacrifice to the gods or being scourged and crucified. By his own request the cross was diagonal. He, like his brother Peter, felt himself unworthy to be crucified on the upright cross of Christ.

MEDITATION

Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Andrew. We remember him in the Church by the title “the First-Called” because he has the unique privilege of being the first-person Jesus Christ called to follow Him as a disciple and an apostle.

The lessons today for the commemorative Eucharist point us to respond as he did Come and See so that we proclaim to aa hurting and doubting world to come and see the great hope that we Christians have. A hope that compelled Andrew to travel far to bring it to others. We do not have to travel far but in this age of COVID there is a profound need for hope as people despair and as a result people will have meaning and purpose. So today we seek the intercession of St. Andrew, that each of us may be inspired by his example to invite others to Come and See and through that invitation many others through us may come to believe the truth of the Gospel.

PRAYER: Lord, in your kindness hear our petitions. You called Andrew the apostle

to preach the gospel and guide your Church in faith. May he always be our friend in your presence to help us with his prayers. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,

who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit.

ANCIENT WISDOM/PRESENT GRACE:

“Notice what Andrew said to him: “We have found the Messiah, that is to say, the Christ.” Notice how his words reveal what he has learned in so short a time. They show the power of the master who has convinced them of this truth. Andrew’s words reveal a soul waiting with the utmost longing for the coming of the Messiah, looking forward to his appearing from heaven, rejoicing when he does appear, and hastening to announce to great an event to others. To support one another in the things of the spirit is the true sign of good will between brothers, loving kinship and sincere affection.- St. John Chrysostom
