Alice in a burqa and a male Beauty: children’s classics get modern look

Alice in Wonderland is given a burqa in a proposed modern makeover of a string of classic children’s stories.

The ideas for the new covers include a gay couple in Sleeping Beauty and a Sikh title character for Charlie And The Chocolate Factory with a Rastafarian Willy Wonka in dreadlocks.

They were dreamt up by three friends after they talked to parents who wanted to buy books that reflected their families.

The trio, who work together in advertising, enlisted illustrators to design covers for the project, called Classic Books For Modern Times.
