John Sentamu said the press tried to “create a window” into the Liberal Democrat leader’s mind by pressing him about whether or not he deemed sex between two gay people to be a sin.

He argued that Mr Farron was then forced into theological pronouncements for which he is not qualified.

Early on in the election campaign Mr Farron came under fire after he repeatedly failed to close down speculation that he deemed gay sex to be a transgression against God.

The Lib Dem boss later clarified that he did not view gay sex to be a sin but stressed that as a political leader he should not “pontificate on theological matters”.

Speaking to the Andrew Marr show, Archbishop Sentamu said had Mr Farron expressed a view on homosexual people then it would have been fair game for the media to push for his wider opinions.

“If he expressed no view, I don’t think anybody is of right to interpret and read the mind of the person. As Elizabeth 1 said, ‘we do not have a window into people’s souls’,” he continued.

“Tim Farron expressed a view and they were pressing and pressing and pressing… [and] tried to create a window into his heart.”
