BBC star Dan Walker – ‘Of course I believe in dinosaurs, I’m a Christian, not a creationist’

Presenter Dan, who replaced Bill Turnbull on the BBC Breakfast sofa, talks faith and football – and his wish to some day host Match of the Day permanently.

It’s often said you should never discuss religion or politics in polite society. But when presenter Dan Walker arrived on the BBC Breakfast sofa earlier this year, he was given very little choice.

For the presenter carries a bit of belief baggage, having in the past explained his Christian faith means he won’t work on a Sunday and how “God has a plan” for his career – and been branded a creationist.

Dan, 39, now wants to set the record straight in his first interview since replacing Bill Turnbull in February.

“I have never, and will never, described myself as a creationist,” he says. “As a Christian, just like every Christian, Jew and Muslim, I believe that God is behind creation. But that is it.

“I want to live in a world where we can have different views on things. Gary Lineker can present Match of the Day even though, would you believe, he supports one of the teams in the Premier League.

“An atheist can interview a Hindu about the intricacies of their faith. I don’t understand why we are terrified of people who think slightly differently to the way we do.”
