From Conservative Grassroots:

The British Bill of Rights must be rooted in our Judaeo-Christian heritage if it is to be worth the paper it’s written on, say Grassroots conservatives.    The Group, which represents ordinary Conservative members, endorses the manifesto pledge made by David Cameron, but warns that “this historic opportunity could be lost if Christianity is airbrushed from the policy discussion”.

The warnings come on the eve of the launch of a major new book sponsored by the group, Religious Approaches to Human Rights, by Martin Davie – who says:   “The concept of  human rights was developed as a powerful tool to promote human flourishing.  Religion has recently come to be perceived as a barrier to human rights.

…However, religion is needed to provide a robust philosophical foundation for human rights, and is a vital component of human flourishing that human rights aim to achieve.”

Ed Costelloe, Chairman of Grassroots conservatives, commented: “We hope this book will be used by policy makers when examining the complex issues around writing a British Bill of Rights.
“Values such as tolerance towards others and respect for the rule of law sit alongside freedom of speech and thought. All of these values must be underpinned by the major religions and by Christianity in particular. If it is not then the document will not be worth the paper it’s written on.”
