British Peers blame UNHCR for bias against receiving Christian refugees from Syria

Oct 26, 2017 by

Lord Alton, Baroness Nicholson, Lord Carey and General Lord Dannat have written to the Times with others to correct a Times report on 23rd October that fewer Christians than Muslims have been killed in Syria. They claim Christians and other religious minorities have been specifically targeted by jihadists.

They cite Home Office data that the UK resettled 64 Christians out of 4,175 Syrian refugees in the year up to last October. Last year only 6 of the 383 Syrian refugees resettled in New Zealand were Christian and in the US only 125 of the 15,479 Syrian refugees admitted were Christians.

The signatories blame the UN High Commission for Refugees, to whom the UK and New Zealand governments outsource refugee selection.

They call on Western governments to address this issue urgently.

Other signatories include Lord Farmer and Dr Martin Parsons, head of research, Barnabas Fund International Headquarters.
