Practicing Christians now make up one out of six of the young people in the United Kingdom as thousands appear to convert to Christianity after church visits, according to a new study.

A study commissioned by Christian youth group Hope Revolution Partnership and conducted by ComRes suggested that Christians make up 21 percent of people in the U.K. ages 11 to 18, and that 13 percent of them attend church services. The study hinted that there are more young Christians than was previously thought, The Telegraph reported.

A 2006 study by a church statistician suggested that the number of Christians who were 11 to 14 years old who attended church was only 6 percent, while only 5 percent of those 15 to 18 years old were churchgoers. The recent study done by ComRes suggested that 13 percent of teens embraced Christianity after visits to church buildings.

The Church of England’s national youth evangelism officer, Jimmy Dale, conveyed shock at the results of the ComRes study. He said his team could not believe the results because it seemed too high.

“There was disbelief among the team because it was so high,” said Dale. “What is really exciting for us is that there is this warmth and openness that we are seeing among young people – they are really open to faith.”

In addition, Dale said the new study suggested that church visits were more effective in attracting new believers than creating youth groups and other related programs. He called it a “wake-up call” for the church and noted that there were a lot of young people visiting churches as part of their school activities.
