Former Ukip leader fears ‘appeasement of Islam’ threatens Christianity

A SENIOR peer fears Christians could be arrested for airing their views on Jesus under hate crime laws which he claims “appease Muslims”.

Lord Pearson of Rannoch said free speech is being eroded by political correctness and people are becoming afraid to speak their minds in case they break the law.

The former Ukip leader said he, and other peers, have become increasingly worried about freedom of speech.

Lord Pearson has repeatedly asked the Government if Christians who preach the supreme divinity of Christ would be guilty of a religiously-motivated offence.

This year the Crown Prosecution Service produced revised definitions of the different strands of hate crime – racist, religious, disability, homophobic, biphobic and transphobic.

In a debate on hate crime in the House of Lords last week, Lord Pearson asked: “Will the Government confirm that the latest definition of a hate crime is one which is perceived to be motivated by prejudice based on a person’s religion?”
