A gay couple claims that five churches in Uttoxeter declined to grant them permission to get married, thus the two resorted to holding their union at the Burton Register Office.

Thomas Clark, 25, and Lee Tams, 28, dreamt of getting married at a church in the former’s hometown of Uttoxeter. However, they decided to hold their union at the Burton Register Office instead after five churches allegedly turned them down, the Mirror detailed.

According to Clark, the four churches in Uttoxeter that turned them down are St. Mary’s Parish Church, Uttoxeter United Reformed Church, Renew Church, and Uttoxeter Methodist Church. The fifth one is St. Michael’s Church in Rocester village.

“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but it made me feel very disappointed, upset and angry,” said Clark. “I don’t feel like we should be treated differently to any straight person and sexuality should not be an issue.”

In response to Clark’s statement, St. Mary’s Parish Church rector Margaret Sherwin said she had to abide by the law of the Church of England. She also said her license as a vicar would be revoked if she gave Clark and Tams permission to get married in their church.
