Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will have the odds in their favour as they exchange vows in a fortnight’s time, experts have found.

By getting married before they start a family, the future royal couple will be in keeping with centuries of royal tradition, but their choice actually raises their odds of staying together.

Three in four mothers (76 per cent) who marry before having their first child are still together when their child their mid-teens, Marriage Foundation research has found. In contrast only two in five (44 per cent) mothers who marry after starting a family stay together. Less than a third (31 per cent) of those who don’t marry are still with their partners by their child’s fifteenth birthday.

“The odds are stacked in favour of the marriage between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle because they have chosen to get married before having children – if they have them,” says Marriage Foundation research director Harry Benson. “This is probably the single biggest factor determining future relationship stability for any couple.

“Of course, we can’t predict with any real confidence whether one particular couple will make their marriage work or not, but research has identified factors that can generally raise or lower the risk of subsequent divorce.”

Prince Harry is in the majority of his age group to tie the knot, but not by much. Two in five men born in 1984 will never marry according to current trends.

The fact that the royal couple’s big day will be witnessed by 600 guests in St George’s chapel, thousands lining the streets outside and millions of TV viewers is also a plus, according to the research.

Harry Benson commented: “Having a lot of guests at their wedding will set them off on the right footing. Getting married means taking the risk of committing to one person and closing the door on other options. Having lots of friends and family present at the wedding affirms that this is an excellent choice.
