John Humphrys looks at gender identity

Oct 18, 2017 by

A special half-hour documentary on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. Veteran broadcaster John Humphrys begins with the way attitudes towards homosexuality have changed in the past 60 years since the Today programme first aired. He goes on to examine the most radical, and rapid, recent change: attitudes to gender. The programme features interviews with ‘trans’ children and their parents, arguing for easier access to drugs and surgery, and Stonewall activists who insist on the right for adults to change gender simply by filling in a form. The Government’s sympathetic response to clever lobbying is covered. But then some voices are heard which question the rush to accept this radical gender ideology. A feminist is concerned about the effect on women; a medical student who began the process of transition and then regretted it thinks that the effect on children is harmful. One of the last words is given to Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali.

This is significant, as there is no question that the programme, while offering opinions from both sides, reaches a conclusion which is deeply skeptical about the radical cultural experiment, and highlights the lack of proper debate owing to a climate of fear and political correctness.
