Legitimacy questions raised over Australian SSM poster

Concerns have been raised over the legitimacy of a controversial poster supposedly photographed in a Melbourne laneway.

An offensive ‘Stop the Fags’ poster went viral on social media and subsequently in mainstream media, prompting the leaders of both major political parties coming out to condemn the print over recent days.

The legitimacy of the posters has come into question, with only one single image of the poster being found on social media, and media outlets unable to verify the original photographer.

Melbourne City council has confirmed it has seen no evidence of the posters despite some media outlets reporting the posters had been ‘plastered all over town’.

News Corp columnist and host of Sky News’ The Bolt Report, Andrew Bolt, reported the poster controversy as ‘a con’ in the Herald Sun.

‘Media outlets like Channel 9 and news.com.au agreed there were more such posters around Melbourne. As the Australian Women’s Weekly put it: ‘Melbourne streets plastered with disgustingly homophobic posters ahead of plebiscite.’

‘But Channel 10 had a problem: it could not find even one.
