With less than two weeks to go until the named person scheme is rolled out in the Borders, it can be revealed that those involved are getting less than 3 hours training for the job.

While elsewhere in Scotland courses are lasting 5 days in the Scottish Borders new named persons are given just 3 hours of training, including a 15 minute coffee break.

The shocking revelation follows the admission from Scottish Borders Council earlier on in the year that “no additional budget has been allocated by the Council to facilitate implementation of the named person scheme.”

Named persons will have to monitor and report on 14,500 children of school age and 5,300 children up to the age of 5 in the Scottish Borders.

Local MSP John Lamont has said the news that named persons are receiving minimal training will concern parents and has repeated his call for a rethink about the scheme.
