Thursday’s reading list – Trump’s triumph, Hollywood harassment and transgender tyranny

Today’s reading list is going to be short as I have limited time, being such an important person.

We start, as always, with City Journal. I had cause to re-read this analysis of the Trump win, and a year later it stands up to scrutiny. Trump and the American Divide lays out just how different the Red and Blue states are. It is a little-noted fact that, geographically, everywhere but the coasts voted for Trump. Only the West and East coasts voted for Clinton (I note in passing that most of the sexual harassment scandals also are pouring out from the coasts, but I am sure that has no firm link with Leftism . . . none at all).

An interesting observation on language here: ‘Outside California and New York City and other elite blue areas, for example, foreigners who sneak into the country and reside here illegally are still “illegal aliens”, not “undocumented migrants”, a blue-state term that masks the truth of their actions. Trump’s Queens accent and frequent use of superlatives – “tremendous”, “fantastic”, “awesome” – weren’t viewed by red-state America as a sign of an impoverished vocabulary but proof that a few blunt words can capture reality.’

This is the best analysis of the Trump victory you will read.

This next, on the continuing fall-out from the sexual harassment scandals rocking Hollywood and the media establishment in the US, is thoughtful.

Finally, I return to Melanie Phillips once again and this superb warning about the transgender hysteria that is sweeping the nation.
