Over the past few months a row has erupted in the University of Strathclyde Glasgow over whether or not a group of students is permitted to form a ‘pro-life’ society or club. The University of Strathclyde Students’ Association (USSA) currently will not affiliate any group which campaigns in favour of the human rights of the unborn.

In this matter, the USSA are following a trend which is sweeping UK universities of the stifling of debate and discussion of any student or group who dares to dissent from majority opinions. This happened most prominently in Oxford in 2014 when a debate on abortion was closed down because the participants were both men. The pro-life society in Cardiff also faced the possibility of censorship as their union voted on whether or not to permit the pro-life society to remain within the union. Fortunately, common-sense and respect for the freedom of expression prevailed!

Last November, then, a group of students from Strathclyde attended a debate at their student parliament to change USSA policy. They wanted the USSA to approve freedom of speech and permit a pro-life society on campus. Sadly, the student parliament upheld their ban on the free expression of ideas and the pro-life society was not allowed to be formed.

In their continued battle against the USSA, the group of pro-life students has written to the Governing Body of the University asking them to intervene in this important matter.
