Beware the thought police

They’re coming to get you … but only if you’re Christian

In recent months, Muslims kneeling down to pray in public – on streets, in the road, at railway stations, and even on the hard shoulder of motorways – have become increasingly evident, and nothing is done to stop them or ask them not to obstruct passers-by (or passing cars) … even when they are posing a clear obstruction. Yet a Christian woman, standing quietly with head bowed and eyes shut outside a closed abortion facility is arrested … because she’s known to hold pro-life views, and MIGHT BE PRAYING! SILENTLY!

Heaven defend us from such depravity! And well done to the police for their brave, prompt and pre-emptive action, that clearly prevented what might well have turned into a very nasty incident!

Joking apart, how on earth have we come to such a point where, in a country that is still nominally Christian, believers can be arrested because they might, just might, have been praying? This isn’t just a case of double standards, it’s a terrifying attempted extension of State power, which is now seemingly claiming control over what people are allowed to believe and think. What about the UK’s much vaunted freedom of belief, thought and expression? What about our democratic process, that enjoins respect and freedom for all, in so far as that freedom doesn’t encourage violence or hurt another?

In Isabel Vaughan-Spruce’s case, what were the police so concerned about, that they should have arrested a known Christian standing doing absolutely nothing wrong, but who ‘looked’ as if she might be praying? Did they fear that there might actually be a God who was listening and who might respond? And might it just be possible that this God wouldn’t be too pleased by our society’s mindless slaughter of the unborn? After all, standing in the early evening, when everyone’s gone home and the facility is closed isn’t going to harm anyone, is it? So why shouldn’t she be allowed to have a private chat with God, if she wanted? Where’s the harm? And don’t we all have that same right? Why should the State police our thoughts?
