California city allows polyamorous groups to register as ‘domestic partners’

Polyamory US

The densely LGBTQ-populated city of West Hollywood, California, has established a domestic partnership registry for polyamorous relationships — i.e., more than two persons of any sex or combination — after the City Council voted unanimously to approve legal protections for “alternative” family structures.

There is no limit to the number of members of such registering groups. An entire homosexual or co-ed softball team could presumably register as “domestic partners” if they wanted to.

Although the measure doesn’t go as far as classifying such relationships as “marriage,” it nonetheless further weakens the protective barriers for children that the immutable definition of marriage once vigilantly defended.

Katy Faust, founder and president of the global children’s rights organization Them Before Us (TBU), has long warned that introducing even one unrelated adult into a family heightens the risk of child abuse and neglect.

Brad Wilcox, a University of Virginia sociology professor and director of the National Marriage Project, told WORLD that West Hollywood’s recognition of polyamorous groupings normalizes households where children live with adults who are not related to them by birth or adoption and that those kids are at a far higher risk of suffering violence or abuse.

However, proponents of legal rights for polyamorous groupings are not concerned about the best interests of children; they’re only interested in the right of designated sexual partners to pick up kids who are not their own from school.

“This law is just the beginning,” swore Christina Fialho, an attorney and founder of bisexual media representation activist group Rewrite the BiLine, a chief proponent of the ordinance.

The measure will allow those in multi-partner relationships to gain legal rights in housing, healthcare, education and other services and extends legal protections requiring healthcare facilities and city-operated jails to recognize visitation rights.

“Each new modern family manifestation carries child harm,” said TBU’s Faust, in response to West Hollywood’s move.

“We must retake marriage,” she declared.
