n the news this week, St Paul’s Cathedral has entered into a four year contract with Fabric, a leading London nightclub provider, to stage what it calls contemporary music events within the cathedral, the first of which is scheduled for 29thOctober, artist yet to be announced. The contract has been fulsomely praised by Muslim mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who said on X, ‘Fabric. St Paul’s Cathedral. Name a more iconic duo. Bringing together these two institutions will create a one-of-a-kind experience, pairing world-class music with one of our most special landmarks.’
Hu…um. In 2016, Fabric, the nightclub, temporarily had its licence suspended, following serious concerns over drug use within the club that had resulted in the deaths of two teenagers. With Khan’s energetic support, the licence was subsequently reinstated a few months later and the club reopened in January 2017. As part of his campaign to have the club’s licence restored, Khan said, ‘I am in the process of appointing a Night Czar who will bring together key stakeholders including club and venue owners, local authorities, the Metropolitan Police and members of the public…’.
