From jihadist violence to parallel societies, Germany is paying the price for decades of political accommodation and denial.
On Saturday night in Berlin, a young man identified as Abdul B drove a van into a crowd attending a Pride celebration. One woman was killed; seventeen more people were wounded, including several who remain in serious condition.
Berlin Police spokesperson Florian Nath confirmed that the fugitive is a known figure within local “Islamic circles.” It has since emerged that he traveled to Lebanon last year in an attempt to join the Islamic State, only to return to Germany, where official programs aimed at deradicalizing him clearly failed.Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner responded with the standard European script. He expressed shock. He called for unity and insisted that such violence had no place in a civilized society. The response is predictable, but it fails to reflect the increasingly brutal reality of life in Germany.
This attack must be viewed through a much broader lens. Elected leaders treat each vehicular assault or stabbing as an isolated tragedy, a random act of madness by a deeply disturbed individual. By framing these horrors as lone-wolf mental health crises, politicians conveniently avoid confronting a totalitarian ideology that has been systematically embedded across the country.
The historical record is impossible to ignore.
