Anita Meston, 63, believes she was discriminated against because of her Christian beliefs
A Christian teacher at a state school was fired after telling students that she was pro-life.
Anita Meston, a 63-year-old history teacher at Biddick Academy in Sunderland, was dismissed in March after a pupil asked her for her opinion on the abortion debate.
Hours later, Ms Meston was summoned to a meeting with the school’s headteacher, who admonished her for expressing personal views in the classroom and said that her contract would be terminated.
It is understood the school had faced complaints about her conduct from parents and students.
The teacher is now suing Biddick Academy for discriminating against her Christian faith, which she argues counts as a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.
Ms Meston told The Telegraph she was “profoundly shocked” by the school’s decision, which she claimed amounted to “censorship”.
