The election of Justin Welby’s successor is shrouded in secrecy. From the likely candidates onwards, here’s our visual guide

It took 17 days for a new pope to be in place after Francis’s death. It has taken almost 11 months to elect a new archbishop of Canterbury since Justin Welby announced his resignation, but the cloak of confidentiality is finally set to be lifted when a name is revealed in October.

These races are notoriously difficult to predict given the secrecy involved and the role divine inspiration is meant to play, but the best clue may come from the bookmakers, who in 2012 had to suspend betting after a flurry of late bets on Welby suggested a leak.

This time, they are predicting that the 106th holder of the role could be the first woman in its 1,400-year history.
