Islamic State (ISIS) has called on supporters to carry out arson attacks on churches and synagogues worldwide this Easter, in response to the closure of the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
In its weekly propaganda outlet al-Naba, the group reportedly said: “In the face of the tragedy of the closure of the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque, it is incumbent upon Muslims everywhere – those who yearn to come to the aid of the site of their Prophet’s Night Journey – to rise up and set fire to the Jewish synagogues scattered across America, Europe, Russia, India, and elsewhere. The same applies to the synagogues in Tunisia, Morocco, the UAE, and Syria; their locations are well-known, and their details have been published.”
The publication also urged attacks on “Jewish gatherings” and encouraged followers to “emulate the actions of the Sydney Heroes,” referring to last year’s terror attacks at Bondi Beach, Australia.
The call comes after Israeli authorities closed al-Aqsa, on the Temple Mount, citing security concerns. The closure, now in its 34th day, is set to continue until mid-April. Both Jews and Muslims regard the site as holy. The Palestinian Authority has condemned the closure, which has remained open since 1967.
