Second Friday in Lent– – Saint Enda of Aran, Monastic, 530
LITURGICAL THEME FOR THE DAY: Edna was noted for his military feats who were convinced by his sister to renounce his warring activities and marry. When he found his fiancee dead, he decided to become a monastic and went on pilgrimage to Rome, where he was ordained. He returned to Ireland, built churches at Drogheda, and then secured from his brother-in-law King Oengus of Munster the island of Aran, where he built the monastery of Killeaney, from which ten other foundations on the island developed. With St. Finnian of Clonard, Enda is considered one of the principal founders of the monastic movement in Ireland.
MEDITATION OF THE DAY: – God instructs Jeremiah to “run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem” and “see if you can find a man who executes justice, who seeks the truth”. The implication is that such a person is rare, if not non-existent, in the corrupted society. The passage focuses on the dire state of Judah, but it also serves as a warning and a call to repentance for those of us today as we live in a world that is ever increasing in a similar state of spiritual decay. We are reminded again of the importance of seeking justice, truth, and righteousness, as pathways for our lives because ignoring God’s word and turning away from Him ultimately no choice at all.
PRAYER OF THE DAY: Father of all, you call me to abundance of life in you. This gift of life and grace is accessed by faith. At the beginning of this day I ask for an increase of this gift that you gave to me initially at baptism. May its increase today cause great rejoicing in my heart and lead me to acts of loving service to everyone, beginning with my brother and sister fellow Christians.. Amen.”
. ANCIENT WISDOM/PRESENT GRACE: “The early church was married to poverty, prisons and persecutions. Today, the church is married to prosperity, personality, and popularity. –Leonard Ravenhill
