TUESDAY LENT IV– Saint Hugh of Grenoble, Bishop, 1132
LITURGICAL THEME FOR THE DAY: Saint Hugh of Grenoble, a bishop of France, whose sincerity and piety were challenged by the corruption in the church that seemed to loom in every direction. After serving as bishop for two years, he decided he could not take it anymore. He left to move into a monastery, but he was called Hugh back to continue the work of reform. In the church and was reasonably effective in the role of reformer, given his strong character and wand great devotion to Christ. Hugh was an unflinching defender of the Church and an eloquent preacher. His humility and grace are considered a role model for bishops.
BIBLICAL MEDITATION OF THE DAY: The understanding of this section of Paul’s letter to the Romans holds many interpretations. At the very least, Paul’s words seem to describe his Christian journey. Certainly, it lent the perspective that part of the Christian life is a daily struggle against sin. However, it would be inexact to suggest that sin is the primary dynamism for a human to accomplish living the Christian life. Of course, Christ is the primary factor in the Christian life, not sin; however, the quick dismissal of many in the church about sin does cause us to ponder this differently today.
At the very least, this section from Romans 7 is a question of how we as everyday Christians struggle in the never-ending challenges of temptation away from grace in which we hope is “to serve the law of God with the mind and heart.
PRAYER OF THE DAY: O Lord my God, who created me in Your image and likeness, grant me this great grace, so necessary for my salvation, so that I may overcome my fallen nature, which drags me down to sin and the loss of my soul. Amen.
ANCIENT WISDOM/PRESENT GRACE: “This grace is so excellent that neither the gift of prophecy, nor the working of miracles, nor even the most sublime speculation, is worth anything without it.” Thomas a Kempis, Imitation of Christ, Book II, Chapter 55.
