Jews continue to live in fear as our institutions pander to Islamists. It’s clear we are no longer the country that fought the Nazis
If we held a minute’s silence for every Jew murdered by the Nazis, we would not speak for 11 and a half years. Holocaust Memorial Day is always a profoundly poignant and solemn occasion, but this year it felt especially dark.
A Jewish friend got in touch to say that he and his wife, both in their sixties, are moving to Israel in May. One of their three adult children lives there already, and another is seriously thinking of leaving the UK. Simon says the pandering to Islamist thugs by West Midlands Police – officers invented a threat posed by Israeli football fans to do the bidding of “community leaders” who had warned that some Jew-haters were going to arm themselves – was the final straw for a family whose traumatised grandparents found grateful refuge here after the war.
It turned out that Craig Guildford, the chief constable who resigned gracelessly after providing “incorrect evidence” to the Home Affairs select committee, was actually selected by a panel that included a leader from a mosque.
Another senior officer was caught on video cheerfully reporting that he consulted the Muslim “community” in Birmingham to decide “what style of policing” was appropriate. You can’t imagine them consulting Harry Hardnuts from the armed robbery community, can you? Threats of criminality can be accommodated, it seems, if the police’s favourite “protected characteristic” is issuing the warnings.
