A major new report has sparked fresh debate over religious liberty in Australia, warning that many Christians believe their freedom to express and practice their faith is increasingly under threat.
The inaugural Australian Christian Freedom Index, based on responses from more than 10,800 Christians nationwide, found that 92 percent of respondents believe it is riskier to publicly express their faith today than it was five years ago.
Nearly half said they now self-censor their religious beliefs in workplaces, schools, and public settings.
The report, backed by the Australian Christian Lobby, points to growing concerns over anti-discrimination laws, workplace policies, healthcare mandates, and restrictions surrounding religious teaching on sexuality and gender issues.
Victoria was ranked by respondents as the most restrictive state for Christians, while New South Wales was viewed as comparatively more accommodating.
Australian Christian Lobby chief executive Michelle Pearse said the findings reveal a widening disconnect between Australia’s commitment to diversity and the experiences of many believers.
“Christians are increasingly feeling pressured to stay silent about their beliefs,” Pearse said, according to the report’s release.
She argued that policies intended to promote inclusion are often being applied unevenly when Christian viewpoints are involved.
Among the concerns raised were mandatory healthcare referrals connected to abortion and euthanasia, vilification laws, and cases where Christians allegedly faced disciplinary action over expressions of faith in professional environments.
