NHS hospitals ‘trying to defy’ trans ruling

Hospitals have been accused of seeking to defy a landmark Supreme Court ruling that trans women are not legally women.

Managers and campaigners pledged “unwavering commitment” to trans people after they suffered “pain and concern” from the judgment, which will force the NHS to bar trans women – people born biologically male – from female-only wards and lavatories.

Hospital chiefs sought to “reaffirm” their support for transgender people in a string of internal memos sent after the decision, as well as offering solutions such as setting up unisex facilities for them to use.

Staff at one hospital group vowed to continue the “fight for full recognition and inclusion” for trans people.

The comments triggered a backlash from other staff members, who said they were “furious” about their hospital’s failure to recognise the importance of the ruling.

Although the hospitals reviewed by the Telegraph all plan to follow updated guidance in light of the judgment, critics said their language suggested they were planning to resist the spirit of the decision.
