A document for staff said there were children whose feelings did ‘not match their bodies’
NHS nurseries are being told to avoid grouping boys and girls together and using gendered language, The Times can reveal.
The guidance appears in the equalities and diversity policy for workplace nurseries at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.
It states that “for the majority of children the gender in which they are born fits them”, but there were some children whose feelings did “not match their bodies in terms of expected dress and behaviour”.
“This is sometimes known as gender variance or gender non-conformity,” it adds.
The guidance also advises nursery staff to “avoid using gender-specific language and avoid grouping boys/girls together”.
