The British government is no longer debating whether to restrict criticism of Muslims and Islam. It is doing so. Through the appointment of an “anti-Muslim hostility tsar,” the adoption of a new definition equating such criticism with racism, and the coordinated targeting of politicians and students who speak out, a clear pattern has emerged. What was once a theoretical concern about stifling free speech has become a day-to-day reality. The past few days and months have made this abundantly clear.
For years, successive governments debated the introduction of a definition for “Islamophobia.” Left-leaning parties and voices, led by the Labour Party, were always strongly in favor, while the Conservative Party and its supporters were mostly against the move over fears that it would stifle freedom of speech in Britain.
Today, that debate has been settled. Those in favor of the move, led by the British government, are actively pursuing the criminalization of criticism of Muslims and Islam. Their goal is not to shelter Muslims from the horror of hatred or physical abuse. Rather, for naked political reasons, they are seeking to criminalize any criticism of Muslim communities or the Islamic faith.
The government’s recent actions demonstrate that it is no longer content with mere debate. In March 2026, the Labour government appointed the United Kingdom’s first “anti-Muslim hostility tsar” as part of a £4 million social cohesion strategy. The new definition describes anti Muslim hostility as “a type of racism” targeting “expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness,” including prejudicial stereotyping that could incite hatred. Officials insist this is about tackling record-high hate crimes while protecting free speech. Critics, rightly, see it as a censorship tool designed to limit scrutiny of Islamic extremism, grooming gangs, and integration challenges.
