Of the 4,849 Christians estimated to have been killed last year on the basis of their religious identity, over 3,400 were in Nigeria, according to the charity Open Doors. Though the country is nominally secular, Islamic law is widely enforced, leading to anti-Christian violence. Last November 300 children were taken captive by armed gunmen at a Catholic school in central Nigeria. Churches are desecrated or razed to the ground. On Christmas Day last year, the Trump administration ordered airstrikes against Nigeria in response to the violence being directed at its Christian population. Still, the abuse continues. In January some 160 worshippers were abducted from two churches and held captive by vigilantes.
