‘It’s trans people they are kicking around’, one delegate told the TUC conference
Trade unions have vowed to oppose the Supreme Court ruling on transgender issues and have called official guidance on single-sex spaces “flawed”.
Delegates at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) voted unanimously in favour of a motion which said the April ruling went against the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
One representative of the Unison union accused Bridget Phillipson, the equalities minister, of overseeing a “segregation” of trans people in society.
The Supreme Court in April ruled that “sex” in equality law refers to biological sex, and should not be broadened to include trans people with a gender recognition certificate (GRC).
The motion passed by unions on Tuesday said “the Supreme Court ruling of the 16 April goes against both recent and past ECHR judgements”.
