A RECENT August ‘silly season’ report was that Kemi Badenoch has lost her belief in God. It appeared at first sight to be a piece detailing an encounter with trauma and tragedy, which indeed it was. But the reflections offered by Badenoch were underwhelming. A public figure aspiring to the highest political office showed the moral and mental inquisitiveness of a not very bright 11-year-old. And this can’t be good for Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative party or, should she ever emerge from the present political stalemate, the country.

There seems to be a relationship of inverse proportions between our technical governance and our cultural wisdom.

We are probably one of the most philosophically maladroit cultures that has ever existed. Of course, it’s worse than that. We have gone mad. The gender wars and the trans debates have formed a kind of group psychosis. The self-satisfied smugness of preferencing fantasy over reality is solipsistic hedonism of an extreme kind.
