The monarchy costs the British taxpayer approximately £1.97 per person per year. The Crown Estate, which funds the monarchy and returns the surplus to the Treasury, generated £1.1 billion for the public purse last year. The state visit to Washington will generate diplomatic goodwill, trade opportunities and bilateral arrangements worth multiples of anything the institution costs. King Charles visiting President Trump is not a constitutional outrage. It is a head of state doing his job at a moment when the transatlantic relationship needs every instrument of soft power Britain possesses.
But since you raise the question of abolition, let us discuss what actually warrants it.
