Church leaders have been warned that they must work harder to make their places of worship more fun for parishioners.

Too many churches are like ‘mausoleums’ because they do not welcome visitors outside service times, the Bishop of Worcester, John Inge, told the first National Cathedrals Conference in Manchester.

He said: ‘Far too many churches remain locked and stand like mausoleums except when they open for worship and have become increasingly marginal to the life of a communities they exist to serve. Not so cathedrals.’

He was backed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who insisted: ‘If you can’t have fun in a cathedral, you really don’t know what fun is.’

Speaking via video link, he told the conference: ‘The first thing I want is for people not to be bored. I want them to have fun. Cathedrals are about God.
