Boris and the Burka

Aug 12, 2018 by

The comments by the former Foreign Secretary have generated a huge amount of reaction, with accusations of cultural insensitivity, even racism, and questions about the kind of society we want to live in, and the nature of the headgear. Is it a symbol of the separation of the sexes, even the oppression of women? Some say it’s simply an expression of personal spirituality, to be celebrated as part of our diversity; others (including Boris Johnson) that it is divisive; comical perhaps, but also sinister. Should we view it as a visual missionary tract and revolutionary flag, symbolizing the submission to Allah which (according to its wearers) we should all adopt?
