C of E Orthodox fight on as new Anglican group set up

Evangelicals in the Church of England have been preparing to contend in the wake of the launch of Living in Love and Faith – while a new Anglican network has also been set up.

At the latest General Synod, a presentation was given on the new Living in Love and Faith (LLF) resources on issues of sexuality and gender.

Meanwhile, a new ‘Anglican Network in Europe’ (ANiE) is being launched under the leadership of Bishop Andy Lines.

Speaking about the LLF presentation at General Synod, conservative evangelical Sarah Finch said: ‘Synod was reminded that we should be encountering the reality of other people’s pain and fear, learning from each other, and looking for Christ in one another. But, as one evangelical Synod member commented privately: “We do not have agreement on what His gospel is.” Then there’s LLF’s attitude to truth – “your truth, my truth” – and its lack of focus on the authority of God’s truth, as found in the Bible. This is where the battle is going to be.’

In developments outside the CofE, the new Anglican Network in Europe is made up of two ‘convocations’: the Anglican Convocation in Europe (ACE) – a new body – and the existing Anglican Mission in England (AMiE).

Andrew Symes, an assistant to Bishop Andy Lines, explained: ‘This is not a knee-jerk reaction to LLF, nor is it a call for all faithful Anglicans to immediately leave the Church of England. For some time there has been a need to create a new structure as a home for AMiE, and the Scottish churches outside the Scottish Episcopal Church in particular. All the founding churches in ANiE already exist, and the groundwork has taken months. Also, there is a genuine desire for ANiE not to criticise or undermine the work of those who feel it’s right to stay in the CofE, but to stand with them in contending for the faith and in sharing the gospel of Christ.’

It is understood that while AMiE is more conservative, ACE is deliberately wider in terms of diversity on secondary issues.
