Can you help 400 families flooded out in South Sudan?

Aid is launching an appeal to raise US $ 13,280 (£10,177)  to help bring urgent relief to Christians in a flood emergency situation in a remote area of South Sudan. A donor has pledged to match all gifts received in the next two weeks ( from Friday 7th) given the emergency

Following heavy rainfall and flooding during the week 26 July – 1 August, this week Anglican International Development received an urgent call for help from the remote area of Wanglei Diocese, where Bishop Zechariah Manyok leads a group of faithful Christian congregations.

Across the region, flooding is widespread, for example parts of the town of Bor on the White Nile have been inundated.  Relief agencies are working on efforts to help across affected regions.  But Wanglei is a remote area, during the wet season it is completely cut off by road. Moreover, unlike the major centres of population affected by flooding, Wanglei comes very low down the priority list because it is a small and isolated region.  Yet there are over 3,500 families affected, many of them with young and vulnerable people who urgently need to leave their flooded homes for higher ground.  To complicate matters, all this is unfolding against the backdrop of continuing violence in war-torn South Sudan: just last week the cathedral in the neighbouring diocese was attacked ( as reported on the front page of the CEN ) and Christians, including the Dean, were killed.  A report from the Red Cross gives an overview of the situation.

Working with the South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC), we have identified that an early delivery of supplies to help 400 of the most vulnerable families would make a significant, life-saving difference.  This would involve flying in plastic sheeting to make rafts to enable families to evacuate from flooded homes, and providing blankets and mosquito nets (to counter the threat of Malaria).  The precise consignment has been validated by SSRC and adheres to their standards and recommended criteria.

AID is appealing for US $13,280 to enable plastic sheeting, blankets and mosquito nets to be flown to the Wanglei area.  This emergency relief package has been drawn up jointly with Bishop Zechariah (who gives us the on-the-ground updates), AID and SSRC. Importantly, both Bishop Zechariah and SSRC have confirmed that what AID is proposing to provide through this appeal is not being met by any other agency and will have a significant and rapid impact on relieving the current suffering in Wanglei.

The precise quantities are costs are as follows:

400 Plastic Sheets      – US$17.5 each = $7,000

800 Blankets               – US$3.60 each = $2,880

400 Mosquito nets     – US$ 2.0 each  = $800

Total US$ 10,680 + transport/flight US $ 2600 = $13,280

We would be really grateful if you would give your consideration to our appeal.  Any donation you are able to offer would make an enormous difference to these suffering Christians.

Yours sincerely
