A leading African Cardinal visited Washington, DC this June seeking to address how Roman Catholics can best engage on the liberalizing social trends within the Church, particularly in the United States and the West more broadly.
Bishop Cardinal Robert Sarah’s June 13 talk, “The Catholic Church’s Enduring Answer to the Practical Atheism of Our Age,” offered a defense of traditional Roman Catholic teachings, while warning against liberalizing values that have taken hold in European and western nations.

A social conservative on religious teachings including marriage, sexual ethics and morality, Sarah is regarded as among potential selections to serve as the next Pope. He serves as Prefect emeritus of the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, a dicastery of the Roman Curia that handles most affairs relating to liturgical practices.
Speaking at the invitation of the Napa Institute and the Catholic Information Center in Washington D.C, the Archbishop’s talk was hosted at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on the campus of the Catholic University of America.
