Church Society Newsletter

Dear friends,

It is more than a month since General Synod, and it is encouraging to hear of churches and individuals taking courageous steps around the country. Diocesan Evangelical Fellowships are gathering momentum, organising meetings with bishops, making public statements, pausing parish share and much more. Such steps are much easier to take as part of a fellowship, both locally and nationally. At Church Society, we want all our individual members and partner churches to know that they are part of a wider fellowship, praying for each other and supporting each other. Our Zoom coffee hours have been a great encouragement to those who have been able to come, and you’ll see below that we have more planned later in March. Our Regional Directors are also available to talk with you about your particular situation and help connect you with others in your diocese.

All the Directors are working hard to produce resources that will help churches at the moment. Last week’s podcast helped to answer questions we’ve been getting about setting up parish trusts. We’ve had requests about resources on the question of canonical obedience and there are links to several helpful documents below. We want to make sure that we are prioritising the things which are most important and urgent for you, so please do let us know if there is anything else you need from us!

While it may feel as though we are in a crisis situation, this is merely the beginning. In this recent blog post, Chris Moore encourages us to ‘Hold on!‘. Things will be difficult, they will be messy and at times we may feel as though we are compromising beyond our comfort zone. But although this is certainly a time for differentiation, and possibly a time for disruption and disobedience, it is not yet the time for giving up on the Church of England.

Oaths of Canonical Obedience
