Church to be placed on every estate of UK – say Church of England

A church on every estate in the UK is the ambitious new vision of the Church of England.

The project, backed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, will see residents on large estates receive help to set up and lead the new churches.

It aims to bring Christianity and church life to communities which might not otherwise attend standard services – and help tackle the rise in violent crime.

Community centres, cafes and schools will be used as bases for worshippers to meet.

Thriving church estates have already sprung up around the UK and church leaders say they build stronger communities.

The Bishop of Burnley, Philip North, chairman of the Archbishops’ Estates Evangelism Task Force, said: “The vision is a thriving, loving Christian church on every single large estate. “That’s not a building – we’re talking about church as community of people.

“Sometimes it will be in a church building, but often it might be in a community centre or in a school or a large cafe. “That’s the vision; a thriving Christian community on every estate.”

Estate residents will be trained to lead the churches, including the possibility of ordination.
