Critics shocked to learn the Church of England is a church

The Church of England has reiterated its biblical understanding of marriage in new pastoral guidance: that marriage is a “lifelong union between a man and a woman, contracted with the making of vows” and that for Christians, it “remains the proper context for sexual activity.”

This biblical standard isn’t new, and it shouldn’t be surprising. Yet some critics seem shocked that the Church of England would teach … the Bible. […]

One of the fundamental tenets of Christianity is the belief that God designed marriage to be between one man and one woman and that faithful Christians should abstain from sex until marriage. The Church of England is simply stating in its guidance that this teaching still stands even if the civil laws of the land change.

The media has latched onto this, in part, because abstinence is so completely countercultural. As one commentator put it, this teaching is “out of touch with the lives of, well, basically everyone in England.” He was mocking the church, but the point remains: Society glorifies sex, and those who don’t are seen as the abnormal dolts depriving themselves of normal satisfaction.

Some have also labeled this guidance an affront to the LGBT community, since it specifically excludes same-sex couples from church-accepted marriages. Even self-identified churchgoers have expressed concern:
