Daniel Andrews is slammed over his bizarre excuse for keeping churches closed while opening pubs – as priests accuse him of mocking people of faith

Daniel Andrews has been slammed for saying churches pose a Covid-19 risk and should remain closed because people spread the virus by singing and they are badly cleaned by volunteers.

Under Victoria’s coronavirus rules, places of worship are shut and outdoor religious gatherings are limited to five in Melbourne and 20 in regional Victoria.

Meanwhile, regional pubs can host 70 people outside and 40 inside and city pubs are due to re-open next week.

Religious leaders and politicians say the rules are unfair and some have even accused the premier of mocking and singling out people of faith.

Asked on Wednesday why worshippers are being treated differently to drinkers, Mr Andrews replied: ‘Do they sing at the pub?’

He then questioned the cleaning standards of churches, saying: ‘Is a church cleaned to the standard that a pub may be?

‘I know that there are many arrangements where it will be someone from the parish who out of the goodness of their heart will clean the church. It may not even be a paid thing.’
