Gays and unmarried lovers should repent, bishop insists

Gay and unmarried people who have sex should be encouraged to repent by priests, a Church of England bishop has said.

Only once they have done this should those who have sex outside of heterosexual marriage be allowed to take Holy Communion, according to an open letter from the Bishop of Maidstone, the Right Rev Rod Thomas.

The letter was sent to his superior, the Bishop of Lichfield, the Right Rev Michael Ipgrave, who said last month that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people should be encouraged to become vicars and should always have “a place at the table”.
