Hold the Line!

Last week saw the seventy-fifth anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, when the Allies attacked supposedly impregnable Nazi defences to begin liberation of the Continent from an evil invading force that had illegitimately seized control.

After the defeat of Dunkirk in 1940, it would have been so easy for us simply to have given up and surrendered.   Instead, with dogged determination and tenacity, between May 26 and June 4  that year, 300,000 troops of the British Expeditionary Force were evacuated from the beaches and brought home  – by naval vessels joined by hundreds of civilian boats, who had responded valiantly to a call for help broadcast over the radio.    Many judged too old or too young for combat, these ordinary men and boys had set out from home with no idea at the time where they were going or what had happened – knowing only that ‘our boys’ were in trouble.

What insanity!  In those dark days, with the whole of Europe under Nazi domination, we stood entirely alone. And within weeks we found ourselves faced with a fresh threat, as the Germans launched an air attack designed to bring us to our knees, preparatory to invasion.      Again, with a military machine far bigger and better prepared than our own, they almost won – and indeed would have, if Hitler hadn’t at the last moment diverted his focus to Russia.   But our young pilots defended us against overwhelming odds, refusing to give up. Not for nothing did Churchill say, ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few’.

Four years later, on June 6 and aided by the Americans and Canadians, we went back. Many soldiers died in the following struggle, but we won, and in so doing we freed Europe of Hitler’s evil and demonic domination.

Today, we are fighting a similar battle for survival.   There has this time been no armed invasion. Instead the attack has been covert and insidious, orchestrated by a deliberately unseen foe, whose aim is to destroy the foundations of our society – religion and the family – and all we hold dear, from within.   At heart, as it has always been, this is a spiritual battle, with the devil challenging, and trying to wrest control from, God.    And on this occasion, up to now, he has been spectacularly successful.  Under his malign influence, we have committed mass genocide by slaughtering the unborn; we have taught our young that sexual licence and promiscuity are human rights; and we have sought to recreate creation, genetically modifying crops, species, and even the human genome.   Because we listened, we have become a nation under bondage, self-propelling at the speed of light towards judgment and the Apocalypse.

But it’s not over yet, and the lesson from D-Day is that things can change!  The world was saved back then by the dogged determination and refusal to give in of a few – a remnant, who fought for the freedom of those who couldn’t, for whatever reason, defend themselves.  We who stand against the growing tide of evil have neither started nor chosen this present battle, but we must finish it.  The fate of the world hangs in balance.  The message for us today is, Hold the Line!  Though it may seem that we are faced with merciless opposition and overwhelming odds, we must not give in.  We fight for the future of mankind and of the world – and we go in the name of God.
Hold the line.  We shall fight back … and we shall win.
