Is this the end for Mermaids?

The Charity Commission has today announced a formal investigation into Mermaids. The biggest question this raises is: what took it so long? After all, the charity for ‘trans youth’, as Mermaids describes itself, has been rocked by multiple near-fatal scandals in recent months. A trustee was revealed to have given a speech for a paedophile-aid group. Its digital-engagement officer was found to have posed for explicit pictures. Staff were alleged to have given children dodgy advice on puberty blockers and to have sent breast-binders to girls behind their parents’ backs. And of course, most damaging of all, it promoted the lie that children can be born in the wrong body. A reckoning has been coming for a long time. But we should remember that, when it comes to gender extremism being pushed on kids, the problem is much bigger than one charity. Whatever happens with Mermaids, we have a lot more work to do to free young people from this dangerous ideology.
