At least two Church of England cathedrals are advertising zero-hours contracts just days after Justin Welby called them “evil”.

Job adverts posted by Gloucester Cathedral and Norwich Cathedral offer the roles under the contracts, which on Wednesday the Archbishop of Canterbury told the TUC conference were “the reincarnation of an ancient evil”.

Meanwhile, it has also emerged that the Church of England has said it will keep shares in Amazon, despite Archbishop Welby saying the firm was “leeching off the taxpayer” for paying “almost nothing” in taxes.

Gloucester’s advert, for a cathedral porter earning £8.75 an hour, notes that the work will “mostly be evenings and weekends”.

The role is described as: “Working on a flexible basis in order to provide a high quality of support to clergy, hirers and other users and to support the Cathedral’s ministry of welcome to all.”
