FIFTH THURSDAY OF LENTSaint Lea, Prioress, 384

LITURGICAL THEME FOR THE DAY: St. Lea of Rome is known only through the testimony of her beloved friend, the learned St. Jerome.  We know that she lived contemporaneously with St. Jerome during the 4th Century.  She was a noblewoman of Rome, born into wealth and privilege and married up the social ladder.  However, soon after her marriage she was widowed and left in a very financially sound position.  Instead of retiring as a wealthy widow, however, she joined a convent of consecrated virgins in the city—shedding all the money and social standing she possessed.  In later years she was named the prioress of the convent. During her tenure in religious life, it seems she become well-acquainted with St. Jerome, whose account of her stands as one of the primary sources of evidence for her existence and age-old veneration as a saint.

MEDITATION OF THE DAY: ” The lesson today is from the book of Deuteronomy (from the Greek deuteronomos, literally, “second law”) which consists of a series of speeches given by Moses to the generation of Israelites who are about to enter into the Promised Land. In many ways, the lectionary text for today may be understood as a microcosm of the entire book of Deuteronomy, as it consists of injunctions to follow the law, as well as motivations for doing so. According to the text God gives life, so the law gives life. Moses urges the Israelites to listen to the statutes and ordinances he is teaching them. Christ encourages us to do the same. Our own teachers and preachers encourage us. This has been a theme in the faith journey for ages, Why? “In order that we may truly live . The law is an instrument for completeness and wholeness. Think about it the summit of the law is to Love the Lord with all our heart, soul, strength and mind and our neighbor as ourself. How could that be anything less than wholeness.

PRAYER OF THE DAY: Almighty and everlasting God, the source and perfection of all virtues, you inspired your servant James De Koven to do what is right and to preach what is true: Grant that all ministers and stewards of your mysteries may impart to your faithful people, by word and example, the knowledge of your grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

ANCIENT WORDS/PRESENT GRACE : ” Those who can sit in silence with their fellow man not knowing what to say but knowing that they should be there, can bring new life in a dying heart”.- Henri J.M Nouwen

Lenten DisciplineIncorporate silence and solitude into your life regularly starting today. Choose a regular time and place to get away from life as usual and spend at least 10 minutes in silence and solitude today and every day. Ask God to help you express your need for Him through a simple prayer, and choose a physical position that will enable you to stay alert yet worshipful.
