SECOND MONDAY OF LENT – St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Bishop and Doctor of the Church , 386

LITURGICAL THEME FOR THE DAY: Cyril was a native of Jerusalem was ordained a priest in 345. He was elected bishop of Jerusalem three years later. He was exiled shortly after his episcopal consecration by Acacius, the heretical bishop of Caesarea, who claimed authority over the Church in Jerusalem. Cyril was exiled a second time by the emperor Valens. Nonetheless he took part in the Ecumenical Council of Constantinople and a was known as a strong and beloved teacher of the Faith and his Catechetical Instructions  remains an important source for our understanding of baptism and Christian initiation.

MEDITATION OF THE DAY: In the first lesson today, we have the continuation of the call of Jeremiah. Whom we are told is uniquely called to be “a prophet to the nations” (1:10). It would be simple to say this is a another call to be a prophetic missionary. It is more than a call it is a , but a commissioning to proclaim the Word to Israel . It is a call to raise them up to a bar as a people and as a nation they have yet to meet. This commissioning is no different for us especially those who have been confirmed through the sacrament of confirmation or even more so ordained or taken vows for religious life.  In all three of those instances we took solemn promises to eb engaged with the people of the world, not just the folks we  have as our own  Jeremiah learned very quickly that  the word of God is an effective reality in the life of other nations, and no less is true of us in the modern era. Jeremiah is to hold back nothing.  His proclamation will offend people and lead to his imprisonment.  However, this is not news, we see the same with St. Cyril and many in the world who are persecuted for the faith

PRAYER OF THE DAY: Lord, please equip me with the courage to be bold in the faith. Give me courage to take the path that might mean making enemies our of friends, but ultimately brings me closer to you. Help me find willingness to risk reputation all for Your sake. Help me love you more than anything or anyone on this earth. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

ANCIENT WISDOM/PRESENT GRACE: Your accumulated offences do not surpass the multitude of God’s mercies: your wounds do not surpass the great Physician’s skill. – St. Cyril of Jerusalem

Lenten Discipline Who is in need of a clear  Christian witness in your life? Today pray for them at morning, noon and the end of the day and let them know you prayed for them and why.
