LENT III  –  Saint Felix of Dunwich, Apostle and first bishop of East Anglia , 647

LITURGICAL THEME FOR THE DAY: Saint Felix (meaning happy or joyful) came to East Anglia from Burgundian territory (probably from one of the monastic houses founded by the Irish missionary, St. Columnbanus. Felix is renowned as a great missionary and became the first Bishop of the East Angles. He set about missionary throughout East Anglia, establishing churches and founding the monastery at Bury St Edmunds. He is also said to have founded a monastery at Soham about A.D. 630. Of him St. Bede writes “Bede wrote that St. Felix “delivered all the province of East Anglia from long-standing unrighteousness and unhappiness. As a pious cultivator of the spirited field, he found abundant faith in a believing people. In no part of England was Christianity more favorably introduced”.

MEDITATION OF THE DAY: Psalm 6 appointed for today is a timely word of wisdom for a time of pandemic . David is a flawed king as and follower as we know but he offers us a template in difficult times. David turns to God refusing to settle for things as they are, a challenge to the order of the world as it would seem. His prayer in this Psalm is an act of relentless hope that considers that no situation falls outside of God’s capacity for transformation, nor of God’s responsibility. Perhaps this image offers us the opportunity to pray  this prayer as if it were not only David’s, but also our own. Though frightened and confused as we may be in this time of COVID we know that we can still be in fellowship with God.

God and we know well the spiritual and  physical in this life, but do we  know where home

is? David knows where to find the strong arms and loving embrace of a God who  sent his own

Son to save us—but we must make the turn towards Him.

PRAYER OF THE DAY:

Lord, give me the will to turn to  you and be saved, for you are the Lord, God.  I call to you this day seeking your presence and solace. I know this day there is no other God, none beside You

I call your name and seek your face . Guide me O Lord this day. AMEN

ANCIENT WISDOM/PRESENT GRACE: “Jesus Christ, Lord of all things! You see my heart; you know my desires. Possess all that I am—you alone. I am your sheep; make me worthy to overcome the devil.”- – St. Agatha.

LENTEN DISCIPLINE Undertake an act of kindness for someone suffering from the pandemic so that they have a sense of hope as David offers to us in the Psalm for today.
